Having a child did not smooth that over and I still have issue about kids wanting to put everything they see inside their mouth - also know as learning about the environment and also known as... total disregard to the dangers of the world. You might remember also one of my previous posts where I was sharing my rather shocking discovery that people did not even wear masks when travelling by train. I mean... how hard is it to buy a mask from the nearest Zabka (store widely spread in Poland - where they have packs of 10 single-usage masks per about 17 zloty OR they also sell packs of 1 or 3 multiple usage masks, made out of cotton) and bloody wear it for 2 hours inside the bloody train?! Not to mention using it in public transport (trams and buses).

Krakow, Public Transport (MPK) and wearing masks

The Polish Ministry of Health reminds that we still have to wear masks, including in shops or public transport. However, many people do not comply with this, as the inhabitants of Krakow point out to us. The problem is particularly visible in public transport, hence the police checks on trams. Theoretically, we can get a penalty of up to 30,000 zlotych for not wearing a mask.

As part of loosening subsequent restrictions in the fight against Coronavirus (entering Phase 4, as the Polish Ministry of Health calls it...) among the other obligations, it was no longer necessary to wear masks widely. However, there are still situations where the mask is mandatory. We have to cover our nose and mouth, among others in shops, public transport vehicles, or in a situation where the distance of 2 meters between people is not maintained, e.g. at a bus stop.

As it turns out, there is a problem with this. A large part of the population forgets that the epidemic is still ongoing and you still need to wear face masks in the above situations. For several days, spokesman for the Ministry of Health Wojciech Andrusiewicz has been calling to remember this. As he himself admitted to what he saw last weekend, where people walk freely in the shops without masks, "cries up to Heaven for vengeance".

Masks must be worn in shops and public transport in POLAND!

"I would appeal to shop owners and salespeople not to let people without masks into stores", says Andrusiewicz. On Tuesday, he said it was the responsibility of the store owner and staff to ensure the safety of all customers. "Lack of a mask gives grounds for not serving the customer. I am asking you to obey the order to cover your mouth and nose. Any shopping center operator can issue an order not to let people in without masks”added a MZ spokesman. Andrusiewicz issued a similar appeal to public transport managers.

"I've been traveling by tram recently. Half of the passengers had no masks. During my trip ticket inspectors appeared three times . The third time I noticed to the controller that passengers do not have masks and should do something about it. He replied, however, that it is not within his competence and he does not have to do anything" - a reader of Gazeta Krakowska points out.

But how is it within the shops? Stores are equipped with solutions conducive to shopping security. Customers can use antibacterial gels or disposable gloves and the cash registers are equipped with plexiglass covers. There are clearly marked safe clearance zones between buyers before the cash registers, and the buyers are informed on a regular basis about the safety rules and the need to keep a distance.

From Monday 22 June, MPK police and inspectors jointly control buses and trams, where they remind residents of the obligation to wear masks. Tuesday's inspections lasted from 8:00 AM to 16:00 on the route from Krowodrza Górka to Mały Płaszów and from Bronowice Małe to Nowy Bieżanów. The action has been planned for the next two weeks. In total, 10 lines were inspected and 63 people who were without masks were instructed.

What punishments can the police give for not wearing a mask on a tram or bus? "We can instruct, hand in a fine of up to PLN 500, or send a request for punishment to court" - emphasises young inspector Sebastian Gleń, spokesman for the Lesser Poland (Malopolska) police. The court may impose a fine of up to 5,000 zł.

According to officials in urban transport, about 15 % people do not wear masks. Mainly young people. Enforcing the order is problematic due to vague regulations introduced by the government under regulations. For example, a person without a mask may explain their health problems, e.g. asthma, but the police cannot require any confirmation of this condition.

Yours truly,

The Twisted Red LadyBug That Wears A Mask While In Public
The Twisted Red LadyBug / Anda Alexandrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01398088236302905248noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7497589761874709083.post-50476036869153747802020-06-25T14:50:00.014+02:002020-06-25T14:50:10.979+02:00Krakow News: Live Music - Promenade Concerts - return to Planty from SaturdayDearest sweethearts,

It seems music is back in Planty for the 4th Edition of the Krakowskich Promenadowej (Krakow Promenades). Inside the shops, malls, public places and public transport they must wear masks, though. This provoked a huge shift in the way quarantine worked - before people wore masks, kept the 2 meter distance and there were not many people on the street... now we fell into the other side, of freedom, of not caring and thinking it is all a hoax! People stopped wearing masks all the time, including in public transport! so it is no wonder to me that the number of cases has spiked and it will surely spike again in a few days...

As you can see from the graph above, there was already a spike. This is mostly due to the new cases coming from Upper Silesian region - where people work in very close quarters, in humid conditions, a perfect place to spread the virus... More than 4000 people in the region have tested positive for the virus (miners and their family, relatives, people that they came in contact with). Despite that, the Government moves on with some schools opening up at the end of May and generally having people from all industries coming back to work in June.

The 4th Stage of Easing Restrictions

On the 30th of May, the 4th stage of loosening the restrictions began. From this day, in the open space, it was mandatory to keep the distance of 2 meters but without having to cover the mouth and nose. In shops, offices, catering establishments, there were no limits on the number of people depending on the surface of the premises, but the mouth and nose must be covered!

On the 31st of May, the limits applied to churches ceased and the gatherings up to 150 people were allowed. From 6th of June 2020, the cinemas, theatres, massage saloons, solariums, gyms, fitness clubs and tattoo parlours were reopened. Discos and clubs remain closed. From May 25th, the care and didactic classes in grades 1-3 of primary schools and consultations for high school graduates were also made available.

There are of course fines, if one breaks the rules but starting 1st of June the ease was so big that I have not seen nor heard of a single individual that was arrested/fined for not applying himself/herself to the law. I do understand that it is heard to stay indoors when the weather is fine, I understand that wearing a mask is not comfortable, or that it may get your glasses foggy from time to time, but isn't it better to be alive and healthy than catching the virus?!

Coronavirus and Public Transport AKA Going to Warsaw

I had to go, this week, to Warsaw, to pick up my new passport from the Romanian Embassy. It has been sitting there since March, when the Coronavirus pandemic kicked in and the Embassy and Consulate closed its doors - reopening them at the beginning of June 2020. Usually I love travelling and going to Warsaw but this time it kinda added the extra stress of not catching anything... I knew how people in Krakow behave in public transport - 80% still wear the mask, but the rest (and a growing number by the day!) is not wearing any... even in public transport, where they should! So I made it clear for myself that precautions should be considered. This is how Tuesday, 9th of June 2020, I wore a mask from 5 am (when I left my house) till 6 PM!

Some people (Coffee lovers) may say that having great coffee is a basic human right. Most of my colleagues and friends cannot wake up in the morning, nor start their daily work duties, before they don't make themselves a strong of hot coffee. It is true, it works like a charm on them, but I also consider coffee as an addiction - just as Internet or Facebook or sweets are an addiction as well... If you Google the subject out you will have many studies stating the PRO and CONs of drinking this beverage. "Studies have shown that coffee may have health benefits, including protecting against Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes and liver disease, including liver cancer. Coffee also appears to improve cognitive function and decrease the risk of depression. BUT! Too much coffee can cause problems, especially in the digestive tract. But studies have shown that drinking up to four 8-ounce cups of coffee per day is safe".

That being said, I am not a coffee drinker myself (I drink only at weddings and I put plenty of milk and sugar to drown the taste) but I absolutely love the smell of freshly brewed coffee! I love the smell of the coffee beans and being in a perfume shop gets me giddy also because I get to smell coffee in-between smelling the fragrances. I love buying coffee for my Mum and Granny - as they are huge fans - and the smell of coffee is a fragrant part of my childhood. Even now, the first thing my Mum and Granny do when they wake up, is to make a fresh pot of coffee and savour it with some really good chocolate (usually Belgian, provided by my sister - that lives in Brussels).

I know a few good coffee places in Krakow but I recently bumped into this small coffee shop next to Stary Kleparz Rynek, just next door to the Zywe Muzeum Obwarzanka, that is such homely! The bar is self-service and you will be called upon when your drink is ready. The cake I had (sernik - cheesecake) was yummy and it had pomegranate pieces on top - the filling was soft and smooth and the crust was just perfectly crunchy. Paired up with the flavoured (rose) lemonade it went very well :) It is a nice place to hang with friends, relax a bit, before heading out to town. The stools and tables are high and the chairs don't have a back you can lay upon, so it is not the kind of place where you sit very long. Plus it is not children friendly and definitely not people-with-disabilities-friendly - as there is a flight of stairs to get inside and there is no other way to get inside.

The main room holds the bar and you can see there the specialties of the day - the sweets. Once you place your order you can sit at a stool in that room or enter the (slightly) bigger one, to your left. It holds a tall long table with 8 top-stools around it. There is another front, right next to the window, with about 4 chairs. It is nicer there, as you have a view over the street and the passerby's. At the back, there is a one-person male/female bathroom for the clients - clean and well maintained. If you ever are in the area and you need a coffee/sweets kick, I recommend you to try Tektura Cafe.

**I was not payed or given any products to do this review. Considering I have a LadyBug Baby girl that will turn 4 years in August and my Granny that is over 80+ living with us, taking the necessary precautions was key: better safe than sorry! I know many of my friends and colleagues did the same. Besides missing the human contact, one of the things I truly miss are the daily walks I had coming from work, enjoying the view of the sunset from one of Krakow's bridges... the sun sparkling over the water... I miss talking by Granny and my little one for walks along the park... This is the very first year I have missed on the blossoms of the trees inside the Wawel Castle inner garden: the lovely magnolia trees.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
As we all know the Polish Presidential elections are coming up this year. My thought is they have eased upon the restrictions only so that the elections still would take place. A show of force that all is well, the Coronavirus pandemic is behind us, and that we should go business as usual... I fear this is nothing that passes by so easily and we may be stuck indoors and with masks upon our faces for the next 2-3 years.

Waiting for the Polish Presidential Elections 2020

The latest news is that Poland will postpone the Presidential elections, scheduled for the 10th of May. As per the DW piece: "Poland will postpone Sunday's presidential election, the country's governing parties announced on Wednesday (6th May 2020). A new date for the election will be announced "as soon as possible," ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski and coalition partner leader Jaroslaw Gowin said in a statement. "Having in mind Poles' safety, due to the epidemic, the elections will be held by postal vote," they said. The decision comes after the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party faced mounting pressure over its plans to press forward with the vote despite health concerns due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The PiS party had been pushing to hold the May 10 election as a postal vote. The short-notice postal vote plans were heavily criticised amid concerns that the hastily thrown together election might not hold up to democratic standards".

Voting by mail... by post... making the personal data readily available does not sound good at all. It seems though that the Polish Presidential elections will happen sometime in June or July. What are your thoughts and feelings on this subject? I would love to hear them out!

In case you were not aware of, since this Monday (4th May 2020) some of the restrictions in Poland, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, have eased up.

Warsaw, Poland

The new normality that will remain for along while is as follows:

maintaining a 2-meter distance in public space from others,

mandatory covering of the nose and mouth in public places (by mask or scarf),

maintaining work and distance education wherever possible,

strict compliance with sanitary rules in places where people are gathered (disinfection and maintaining a proper distance),

quarantine and isolation for infected or potentially infected persons.

The latest "freedom" points since Monday include:

movement for recreation - that means that one can go to the park/forest, you can use bikes or have a run. However, the face must be covered and the social distance of 2-meter must be kept! Playgrounds will remain closed.

religious worship available to larger audience - the number depending on the size of the church/temple/area of worship, as they need to have at least 15 square meters per 1 person.

teenagers over 13 years can walk on the streets without adult supervision.

larger number of people in the shops - the number of customers allowed at one time in smaller shops (less than 100 square meters): four times the number of payment points; in larger shops, there must be at least 15 square meters of space per customer.

Also, since Monday (4th of May 2020) the malls are reopening their doors but less companies inside the malls have decided to go along with the decision.

Yours very much sincerely,

Coronavirus and Black Death

In times like these, it is hard to look at the future and predict anything. We have never been in such a situation before - we cannot compare the Coronavirus pandemic with any of the previous viruses including SARS, HIV, and the notorious Black Death. Of course, both COVID-19 and the Black Death, let's say, are extremely contagious and the sickness spreads from person to person easily through close human contact. The Black Death was an epidemic of plague that paralysed Europe in the 14th century. Again... the Black Death originated from China, just as Coronavirus. The spread was done through the trade routes through the Middle East to Europe - via Italy. The Black Death plague reduced the European population by up to 60%!

According to the Johns Hopkins Institute, today - 28th April 2020 at 9:55 AM Polish Time - the total confirmed cases of Coronavirus worldwide (185 countries/regions) was 3 043 122 people: 211 221 deaths (out of which 26 977 in Italy, 23 521 in Spain, 23 293 in France).

Coronavirus and Poland

We cannot rely on anyone predicting what would be the future like when things change from one day to another. Take for example Poland - a few weeks ago (on the 6th of April, 2020) the predicted peak was in May or June. On the 25th April (Friday last), the Minister of Health in Poland announced that the new predicted peak is for autumn - "it is more common to talk about autumn, September, October, and November". This news comes as a hit, especially as the rules for moving around got a bit looser (since the 20th of April, 2020): parks being opened now for the public (not the playgrounds) and businesses slowly opening up again. This proves that we should all stay on lockdown still, as we have no clue what we are truly facing, yet the Polish Government deems fit to let some things slide, in order to hold the Presidential Elections on the 10th of May 2020. Incumbent president Andrzej Duda is eligible for reelection and he will do his very best to keep the place he has now for the next years.

Coronavirus and the working class

Faethm AI - a fast-growing and globally unique AI Analytics SaaS Platform - is "the world's data source for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Future of Work", as they self-proclaim themselves. They like to look at how the world and work evolve and look also on how different types of work can be transitioned with intelligence, with the help of AI. Faethm uses data to look at how Coronavirus has accelerated the future of how we will work. To be fair, in the past months we have seen how COVID-19 has created a shift in everyone's mindsets, in our social activities, and in the way we do our jobs. Our present activities resemble not in the slightest with what we were doing a month or so ago...

Leaders in all industries now look at not only how their companies can survive, but also on the Health & Safety of the individuals working for them. A company does not run on its own: you need people for that, even if you automatize most things you still need a human to supervise the overall workings. Machines are not yet that reliable ;) not yet... but we are getting there! The general measures run by all companies, no matter the sector/industry, was to drastically reduce the human interaction by immediately instating the #WorkFromHome policies (if they did not already have that in place). In March 2020, MIT Technology Review polled 464 Global Panel executive members on the current state of their companies' remote workforce: 68% of respondents indicated that 80% or more of their employees are currently #WorkingRemotely and another 15% say between 60-80% are.

The key takeaways from the research done by Faethm AI shows the following:

The way we work will change fast! - With the need to work from home we will need to look more and more at tools that would help us and replace some of the tasks we have to physically perform.

New technologies will arise - AI and automation are the keywords of the day!

The negative effects on the working class - The inevitable loss of work brings the need for re-training and career development, so they may be able to find new positions.

A new approach to work - What will we do in the face of a new pandemic?

The Coronavirus crisis also showed the world how the working class and the poor are the most vulnerable - now more than ever! As many workers do double shifts to help provide for themselves and for their families (especially for the ones that have lost their jobs due to businesses closing down). It is all fine and dandy for the celebrities and the people that are able to work with no issues remotely, from home: you order your meals from a restaurant from time to time, you might have a nanny home-schooling the kid (so you don't have to bother), you might even Instagram your dinner and show the world what wonderful cookies you baked or how good your "fresh from the oven" bread looks like... The true working class, on the other hand, needs to ride that crowded metro, wear the mask for fear of catching something, and go to work on a daily basis to earn something to buy a piece of bread to put on the table!

I leave you today with another quote I find particularly relevant for our current situation & I would truly love to know your thoughts as well on this subject:

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”― Franklin D. Roosevelt

I just thought I would go ahead and update you on the situation in Krakow regarding the Coronavirus. The Coronavirus in Malopolska is still dangerous: "over the past 24 hours there were 12 consecutive infections confirmed and 3 deaths reported (data as of 21st April 2020)". Since the beginning of the epidemic in the Malopolska region (Lesser Poland), the COVID-19 virus has been detected in 684 patients and 20 of them died!

The Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station publishes a report of the situation every morning. The one from yesterday shows that the Coronavirus does not want to give up... the number of infections and deaths increases - positive note: growing number of recoveries; negative note: the number of Coronavirus tests performed has fallen again!

I hope that you had a lovely weekend and a peaceful Easter (for all my Catholic readers and friends) & Passover time (for all my Jewish readers and friends). This year I will celebrate yet again 2 Easter: The Catholic one & The Orthodox one (coming up this week). Why not celebrate as much as one can, in these dark and unreliable times? I prefer... no... I choose to be happy in the face of adversity! I was supposed to be flying to Romania today, to join my family in celebrating Easter. Coronavirus has us under self-imposed "Home Arrest" and nobody can tell when this will be over. Some say that a second wave will hit us in the fall/winter as the virus goes dormant. We shall wait and see... But until then, we still have to face the current crisis. Poland is under lockdown and the national presidential elections are coming. What are the latest news?

Reuters notes down: "Polish borders will be closed until May 3 and the government will extend a lockdown for schools and businesses, Poland’s Prime Minister said on Thursday (9.04.2020), meaning restrictions will be in place near the time of elections planned for May 10".

Further restrictions are being placed every week. In order to limit the spread of the epidemic, the businesses will remain in lock-down until April 19, 2020. There are limits on schools, rail and air transport - extended for another 2 weeks (as of 9.04.2020). The Polish people, starting tomorrow (16.04.2020) must cover their mouth and nose when leaving their homes. Standing in public without a mask, scarf of any item that would cover your mouth and nose completely will get you a hefty fine! Morawiecki said in an interview that it is also highly possible that the high-school exams (the "Matura") might be postponed due to the pandemic.

However!!! Poland's parliament has created a plan to conduct the presidential elections (due date May 10th, 2020) by postal ballot! So I am guessing new priorities line up there... as the vote in that way would not be fair nor fully transparent. What are your thoughts and feelings on the topic? I would love to hear it out from you :)

I am a Latin, warm blooded person. I am a Romanian by blood, genealogy and raising. We are taught to be warm and friendly and kind to people around us. When we greet a person we kiss them on both cheeks - in old, golden time, men would kiss the hands of the ladies, when meeting them. We are, by birthright, set culturally in a land of love and friendship. We do not practice social distancing, we encourage social gathering and huddling - short distances between people are a must. We don't get offended if we brush hands inside the public transport, we don't have houses miles away from each-other so you need to understand that Coronavirus was meant to be a challenge for us (for the Romanian people, for the Italians, for the Spanish... for the latin, warm-blooded specimens living on this Planet). Mother Earth knows that and understands us...
Coronavirus brought a "change in the lifestyle" of the regular Italian people (and not only!) as Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte acknowledged. At the time I had started writing this article (23rd of March 2020) Italy's Coronavirus count was of 59,138 active cases - 5,476 deaths and 7,024 recovered. (By the time I have published the article - 28th of March 2020 - the count went to 74,500+ active cases - 7,500+ deaths and 9,300+ recovered). It is ingrained in the heart and soul of the Latins to hug and kiss and rejoice in being together, so this virus came as a challenge for everyone. “We have a collective social life, very florid, very expansive, we have lots of contact, we shake hands, we kiss each other, we hug each other”. “Maybe it would be best in this period not to have too much contact — which for me will be a big change from how I am normally" - says Italy’s head of civil protection Angelo Borrelli.
Having the born need for human touch, for human relationships can only provoke mental damages, if not taken care properly, during these times - when Coronavirus forces us to stay at home in lock-down. It may come as a strain, especially for single people - forced by the circumstances to stay alone inside their flat, in order not to be contaminated or to contaminate others. Also there are strains on larger families now living under the same roof. I know, for one, that my daughter (turning 4 in August this year) is getting bored, so we often change her activities throughout the day. She wants out - she needs out, for the fresh air and the sun and the change of scenery. I am unsure of how much she understands of what is happening. I know it was confusing for her, at the beginning - the first days, to understand that Mummy and Daddy are home all day but they can't actually play with her all the time. This is no vacation or weekend - we need to work, so we close up in our rooms (each of has has its own, as we have conference calls and we need to keep quiet) and don't come out until we are done (or when we need to grab lunch / a cup of tea). She would pop up in our rooms going "Akuku!" as if playing hide and seek... It took time and patience to get into a routine and today we mark more than 2 weeks at "Self Imposed House Arrest".

I know this cannot compare to other situations or other people in history, like:

The Astronauts that live in isolation for hundreds of days (more than a year!) - when your brain needs to really get acquainted with isolation. Take for example this amazing lady: Christina Koch returned to Earth from her 328-day mission on the space station just last month, breaking the record for the longest spaceflight by a woman, while Hadfield spent more than five months on the ISS from 2012 to 2013. She encourages us to learn more during our isolation time: “You should always have objectives every single day,” Hadfield said. “What do I want to get done in the next 10 minutes, and what do I want to do in the next hour? And if today goes perfectly, what will I have done by bedtime tonight?”

The remarkable human beings that were forced to go hide during the Holocaust - take for example Anne Frank and her family, that were stranded for 761 days in the Secret Annex. Everyday under fear of being caught (similar to our fear of catching the virus, or the ones close to us, and ending up as a number in the dead pile). We can learn from her struggles and her amazing Diary that there was always something different each day, but there was also a rhythmicity of how the day progressed. I think we can learn from that, from Anne, that having a pattern and clear guidelines on how your day will progress, is healthy for ones sanity.

I sincerely hope that everyone takes the chance, now that almost the whole world is under lockdown, to reach out to friends and family, to the ones you love, and speak up: I love you! I care! I want to know you are alright, that you and your family are doing well! There are no excuses that we can make anymore, no places to run to, no events or meetings to catchup with... you are inside, between the 4 walls of your phone. Pick up the phone and reach out! Reach out especially to those whom you believe might be the most affected from the lack of human contact. Reach out to your neighbours - leave notes for them - let them know you are there for them. It matters!

Yours very much sincerely,

I hope you all are #KeepingItSafe and #WorkingFromHome if you are allowed to by your employees. When your employee allows you to work remotely you should definitely do that, to make sure you do not run the risk of getting infected by the Coronavirus (or infecting others). I have seen a lot of speculation about the number of tests done in Poland, so I decided to compile a couple of articles from the Polish media and give you the update, in English language, for all to see. At the end of the article I will also list some of the references for this article.

How many tests are done daily in Krakow?

Every day, labs testing samples do a lot of work. On March 12, research began in a laboratory at the Krakow Specialist Hospital John Paul II. On this day, 16 tests were performed. On March 13, 32 tests were carried out, on March 14 - 48 tests, while on March 15 - 62 tests, and on March 16 as many as 64 tests. Approx. 60 tests are the maximum that can be reached at this time. Verification of one "test batch" (individual tests are not performed) takes up to 8 hours.

Summary of all tests from a given day and notification of the results commissioning hospitals occurs on average per day, as long as the inflow of material does not exceed the diagnostic possibilities. Authorities are currently taking actions to significantly increase the number of tests carried out in the coming days.With this number of tests per day, a maximum of about 2 cases per day will be detected in Krakow - which, indeed is a scary thought!

I hope you are all doing well. It has been over a week of #StayAtHome self-imposed quarantine, due to the outbreak of Coronavirus in Poland. There are many trusted sources I use for regular checkup on how the virus spread affects the world and Poland (more specifically), so I thought I would share them with you:

The Polish Government website, dedicated for this - it has the most up-to-date info and it is in English language as well

It has a lot of very good and secure information, but the site is in Polish language. You will need to translate it!

Tips!!! The risk of contracting coronavirus can be lowered!!!

Wash your hands often

Remember to often wash your hands using soap. If it is impossible, disinfect them with alcohol-based (at least 60%) liquids/gels. The virus can be transferred from infected surfaces on the hands, so you lower the risk of infection by washing your hands often. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

Keep safe distance

Keep at least 1 – 1.5 meter distance from a coughing, sneezing or feverish person. Avoid big gatherings.

Protect others if you cough or sneeze yourself

If you sneeze or cough, cover your mouth and nose with a bent arm or a tissue and immediately dispose of it into a closed bin. Wash your hands with water and soap or disinfect them with alcohol-based (at least 60%) liquids. Covering your mouth and nose as you cough and sneeze prevents germs, including viruses, from spreading.

Regularly wash and disinfect touch surfaces

Wash surfaces often touched by many people, such as desks, counters and tables, door-handles, switches and handrails with water and detergent. All places which the household members often use should be carefully disinfected. Remember that microbes collect easily on mobile phones. Regularly disinfect your mobile phone (e.g. with wet wipes soaked with a disinfectant). Do not put a mobile phone on the table and do not use it as you eat.

I don't know about you, but I sometimes think the music and the lights and the smells (deodorants/air freshners) from some shops just kill all your senses! To my greast surprise IKEA Krakow came with an ideea that I sincerly applaud: Sensoric Friendly Tuesday's at IKEA. The great shop will turn off music and commercials as well as dim the lights for the whole day! It will also provide a special mute zone and a cash register with priority for clients with autism. These are just some of the solutions designed to facilitate shopping and increase the sensorial comfort of hypersensitive people in the store.

IKEA Krakow joined the places that introduced the so-called "quiet hours". However, the Swedish store of the Swedish chain went a step further by "silencing" the facility for the whole day. From February 11, 2020, every Tuesday sensory-sensitive people will shop at IKEA Krakow in more favorable conditions. The lighting will be dimmed for the whole day and the exposure will be partially dimmed. All screens will also be turned off, ads and sound messages will disappear. The only exception will be information about the upcoming closing of the store, but this will be read in a subdued voice by an employee. This is not the end of amenities. People who need to relieve tension during a visit to the store can take advantage of the special quiet area. Subdued colors and moody, non-invasive lighting dominate in this place. On all Tuesdays, IKEA Krakow also provides privileged cash registers for people with an autism spectrum, marked with an action logo. It also appeared on separate toilets for a parent with a child, and in all bathrooms the dryers were replaced with paper towels. In addition, IKEA, wanting to make the employees more sensitive to the problems of people with an autism spectrum, organized for them a series of training sessions and meetings with experts who explain how they perceive the world and why they show unusual behavior.

"We are glad that more is being done to facilitate the functioning of people with an autism spectrum and to understand their optics. At IKEA, we always try to be open to everyone and provide our clients with maximum shopping comfort. The introduction of Sensor-Friendly Tuesdays was therefore a natural decision for us. The choice of the day was also not accidental. On Tuesdays between 15:00 and 17:00 "Hour of Silence" is obligatory in the neighboring Galeria Bronowice. Now people with high sensitivity to external stimuli will be able to plan shopping in several places on the same day" - says Sabina Patryas-Bolesta, Sustainable Development Coordinator with IKEA Krakow.

Sensoric Friendly Tuesdays were introduced with the substantive support of the "ZACISZE" Association for Children with Autism in Krakow. Representatives of the organization conducted an audit in the store, based on which a number of facilities were implemented to improve the shopping comfort of people with an autism spectrum.

"Thank you IKEA Krakow for the invitation to participate in the project, openness to all our suggestions and willingness to introduce numerous, often technically troublesome changes. Some of them, such as turning off dryers in toilets and replacing them with paper towels for that day, may appear prosaic to neuronormative people. However, for people with an autism spectrum, they are simply a salvation, because any additional sound, smell, flash of light or touch can lead to stimulation" - explains Alicja Loranc from the "ZACISZE" Association for Children with Autism.
Truth be told, I hate(d) pizza with a vengeance! I would eat pizza only if I was forced and I have never "met" a single pizza that would pass my approval: the dough was too fluffy, too big, to thin/thick, too bland, the ingredients combined tasted aweful, there was always tomatoe paste on the base (I hate it when they do that! Add tomatoe paste as a basis, over the dough, and then add the rest of the ingredients)... let us just say that pizza was never my top choice (even amongst fast food items!). My husband, on the other hand, loves it - so we often ordered and I tried many types. Thank god for the ones with plenty of meat and cheese... but I would always leave the endings in, refusing to eat until the last bite.
Rewind to the month of July 2019, when I joined a startup, and where we have the tradition of Pizza Friday. We always buy pizza from the same location, from Miodowy Piecyk - in Krakow, on Miodowa 51a. I was extremely skeptical but I thought I would give it a go, to see what all the fuss was about: everyone loved this pizza and could not wait until Friday came in! So... I gave it a go and tried the regular one that the boys went for: PARMA - the ingredients on that are: mozzarella di bufala campana D.O.P., prosciutto di parma D.O.P., parmigiano-reggiano D.O.P., cocktail tomatoes, arugula, basil, extra virgin olive oil. I did not expect much but I was overwhelmed and I ate the whole pizza by myself! - I ate even the bread-endings that I would throw out, with plenty of olive oil. Since that Friday, I am a constant - weekly - customer and I love trying the new versions that are being added to the menu.
Miodowy Piecyk - in Krakow, on Miodowa 51a - has a vast menu, and focuses on Neapolitan Pizza. Also know as Naples-style pizza, it is made with tomatoes and mozarella cheese, but it is very specific! It must be made with either San Marzano tomatoes or Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio, which grow on the volcanic plains to the Sounth of Mount Vesuvius. They also must be made with Mozzarella di Bufala Campana - protected designation of origin cheese made with the milk from water buffalo raised in the marshlands of Campania and Lazio in a semi-wild state - and Fior di Latte di Agerola - a cow milk mozzarella made exclusively in the Agerola comune. The Neapolitan pizza is a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) product in Europe - the art behind its making is included on the UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
Even the process of making the pizza is one-of-a-kind and you can see the ladies prepare the pizza in front of your eyes. The dough is knead by hand (or in a low-speed mixer). After the dough rises, the forming must be done by hand (no help from roling pin, machine and so on...) - 3 milimiters thick. Pizza is baked for 60-90 seconds in a 485 degrees Celsius (905 degrees Fahrenheit) wood fire oven. When cooked, the pizza should be soft, elastic, tender and fragrant. Due to the consistency of the pizza, everything is done fresh and the products are brought in from abroad, from Italy. They do not take orders outside of the restaurant, so you must order and eat there, as transporting the pizza would damage it.
I can recommend the pizza, but I have also tried the pasta there, and it is also very delicious. Best would be if you would experience the place yourself ;) as they are friendly and small (read that as intimate!) and they are open for reservations (even for smaller parties, where you can get the whole restaurant reserved). As you enter you have the area where you can order/pay (or you can wait to be served) and to the left there is the one-room restaurant with tables for 2/4 and tables that can be merged. There is always my favourite area: the window-seats that are actually swings that let you enjoy the passerby's. There is only one bathroom (toilet) for both male/female.
If you do manage to get there, do let me know which one you choose ;) They also do seasonal ones - last autumn they had one with fresh sour cream and forest mushrooms that was divine! I cannot wait for the season to come again (I do hope they will make that version once more!).

With great joy I present you a new project that has recently started in Krakow: Take!Cup - hopefully the ending of the disposable mugs. A "bail" system will be in place so hear me out: It is a real Eco-Revolution that creates a deposit system for coffee mugs. This is an initiative that started in Krakow but I think (and hope!) that it will not take long until other cities join in. The Take!Cup system wants to cover most of the popular cafes and restaurants in the city - the ones that offer hot beverages (coffee, tea, hot choco) to go. The take-out beverage can be bought in a cafe marked with the Take!Cup badge and the cup will be given in another, belonging to the system. The safety deposit is setup to be 5 zloty.

The main issue here is the environmental protection. Disposable cups are a real issue! According to the organizers of the campaign, there are 320 000 cups consumned every hour - 400 000 billion used annually! What would happen - how much could we save - if we stopped using them?

CO2 reduction - almost 11 thousand tons/year;

Stopping cutting of the trees - 43 000 trees/year;

Water resources protection - 1,5 billion liters of water/year;

Less trash - 40 000 tons/year;

Energy saving - 320 million kWh/year;

Recycling - the cups are 100% recyclable.

One Take!Cup would save about 500 paper cups! and it is a great alternative - made of PP (Polypropylene) the cups are very durable, diswasher safe, unbreakable and intended for contact with food. They also do not transfer taste and they are BPA-Free. They come in 2 sizes: 300 ml (caramel colored) and 400 ml (ecru).

Have you heard the latest piece of Krakow News? Over 3000 Stuffed Animals were welcomed aboard Krakow Ambulances, with the help of IKEA. The crews fromthe ambulance no longer imagine working without them. The small patients get them inside the ambulances, and when they leave the hospital the little furry friend leaves with them as well - the children can take them home. Thanks to the new collection of this year, organised for the 7th time by IKEA Krakow, a fresh delivery of brand new toys has arrived to the Krakow Ambulance Service - 3250 mascots willing to find new homes.

The small stuffed animals, the furry friends, plan an extremely important role. They help the members of the emergency medical teams to make the first contact with the young patient more pleasant and fun. They also provide support for the toddlers during difficult moments in the ambulance. "Over the past few years, stuffed animals have become an indispensable equipment for our ambulances. They help the crew relieve stress in small patients and perform appropriate medical rescue operations. Every year we use several thousand cuddly toys, because the toy always stays with the patient when they are transferred to the hospital" says Małgorzata Popławska, director of the Krakow Ambulance Service.

IKEA Krakow, thanks to this reocurring action, was able to help over 21 thousand children up to this point. As part of this year's collection, they managed to raise 2250 pieces and an additional 1000 was added by the company. For 3 years now, the Krakow ambulance service has been sharing the stuffed animals also with the Voivodship Ambulance Station in Rzeszsow. This year they plan to take 750 cuddly toys to the children there. "It is extremely encouraging that, despite the enormous pace at which we all live and at which we also shop, we are able to slow down for a moment to reach for the soft toy and give it to the collection for the ambulance. We are happy that every year the campaign meets with such positive feedback from customers. It is thanks to them that it is easier for young patients to go through stressful moments related to ambulance or hospital stay,'' said Urszula Wilczak, IKEA Krakow Director.
